500 years of Urban Farming in Denmark

-Past Experiences & Future Prospects

Visit Dr. Kledal’s website and listen to the two episodes.

Hallkom’s first English podcast production is a reality after I was contacted by Dr. Paul Rye Kledal, who is educated as an agricultural economist. He has written a book with the same title, and wanted me to transform the book into a podcast. Urban Farming is not a new hip trend, you see. And Urban Farming has popular solutions to unpopular problems when we take the climate emergency into account. Method – from Book to Podcast

I read the book and came up with a suggestion to how we could build a two episode podcast where we would take the listeners through the history as well as the future prospects of Urban Farming.

We recorded the interviews for the two episodes in the author’s apartment on Amager, the island outside Copenhagen. We had roughly agreed on how to tell the story of the two parts of the book but also had time for improvisation.

We also wanted to include outdoor reporting in the two podcast episodes. And on a sunny Danish summer day, we set out for an outdoor report both at Denmark’s first rooftop farm in the heart of Copenhagen and with a visit to the historical gardens of Brede, north of Copenhagen.

We biked together the whole way from Copenhagen to Brede, 15 kilometers. We were “at work”. But the day also ended as a memorable and wonderful biking trip.

Above is a picture of Dr. Paul Rye Kledal explaining how the rooftop farm “ØsterGRO” is growing crops on top of an old car building in Copenhagen.
